2017 WORLD ROLLER GAMES – NANJING, CHINA
This Summer I had the honor of coaching USARS Jr. Men’s Team USA with Silicon Valley Quakes’ coach Dave Inouye. During the end of August our Under 20 team competed in the FIRS World Roller Games in Nanjing, China. The trip was an unreal experience.
We went 3-1 during pool play, beating Australia, Chinese Taipei, and New Zealand. In our last game we lost to Czech Republic in a close game. We faced Italy in the quarterfinals but couldn’t overcome their speed. From here we seeded out the rest of the tournament by losing to Sweden and beating Switzerland in our final game. We finished the tournament as the 7th overall seed out of 17 teams. France beat Spain for Gold; Italy beat Czech Republic for Bronze.
While Gold was our goal entering the tournament, 7th out of 17 is nothing to be ashamed of. Competition was tough and with each passing day the team bonded more and more. Many lifelong memories were forged in such a short time – we explored Confucius Temple, Cody bet Brayden that McGregor would win and lost an eyebrow, locals constantly stopped to take pictures with the team, the German team was nuts and loved chanting with the group, most of the team trekked out to the Great Wall for a day – the list goes on.
The trip was especially cool being able to coach with three of our own 18u Bulldogs in the tournament – Brayden Kohler and Noah Aulerich for USA, and Josh Sherrington for Great Britain. Hopefully next year we’ll improve on 7th. Looking forward to the possibility of getting the call once again. A special thanks goes out to Dave Inouye for giving me the opportunity this year!
